Where would Cresswell rank
Think we’re all agreed that he’s past his prime now and is on his way down (some would argue over the speed of the decline).

He’s undoubtedly been a good servant for us over the 9 seasons or so, which got me thinking - where would he rank in our PL era left backs and total history left backs?

For me, he’s Second to Dicks in the Premier League. All time, I’d assume Dicks and Lampard Sr are above him. Who else?

Also, we’ve had some really average left backs over the years.

This is on the back of having two promising left backs coming through - Longelo who scored for Birmingham last week, and Scarles’ performance last night.

Agreed 2nd behind JD... been a great servant ... decent player... chips in each season with a few goals/assists... comes across as a decent bloke as well... if only we had a few more like him over the years

Better player than the Konch... and he somehow got 2 bleedin' England caps

Re: Where would Cresswell rank
Dicks was our starting left back in the Premier League in 93/94 but swapped for David Burrows plus Marsh and cash.

Burrows to be fair was one of our better left backs too.

Dicks then came back until we had Winterburn who was good but past it.

We then had a few stop gaps like Rufus and then Chris Powell until McCartney rolled up.

Cresswell would be 2nd with McCartney 3rd I guess.

Bloody hell - forgot all about Konch.

He was better than McCartney probably.

he's no Wayne Quinn.

or Wayne Bridge.

Illunga was good for one season (but like a left sided Schemmel)

Re: Where would Cresswell rank
Cresswell is a bit of a weird one for me.
He has had some great seasons, some poor seasons and when it looks like we should replace him he seems to have a good season, like he is currently having.
I think he is a good player to have in and around the squad without a doubt and if we lost him it would show I reckon.
He has been nothing short of a solid dependable left back for near on 10 years and forking out 3 million was a bargain that paid off in his first season, the only jot against him is the performance in the latter stages of the Europa league that cost us last season.
He has had some injuries but but has come back stronger and personally I hope he stays for the 10 years and gets a testimonial.

I like Cresswell, even though I've banged on for the past couple of years that we've needed another left back.

Seems a big player in the CLIQUE at the club as well.

Re: Where would Cresswell rank
Julian was just a cut above anything we've ever had at Left Back.....including Cresswell I'm afraid.

He was so good he often covered for the utter dross we had playing alongside him. Cresswell just becomes part of the dross whereas Julian became a one man team.

Definitely the next most important in the PL era.

Re: Where would Cresswell rank
I think it goes without saying that he's our second best ever PL CB. Absolutely miles behind Julian, completely different leagues, however Cresswell has been a good player for us and a successful signing. If there is one thing I'd remember him for (apart from the sending off's last season) is his winner at Chelsea.

Dicks and Lampard the best two I can remember and Cress best behind Julian in the PL era. Yes, he is getting on a bit but always liked him, always felt he was a better player when Oggy was on his game.

Re: Where would Cresswell rank
Dicksie is probably out most over-rated player ever. If it wasn't for his Repka-like tackling he'd be ranked nowhere. Fat, undisciplined and found out at Liverpool.

94-96 we was almost a one man team... goals, assists, best defender.... bloke was fucking imperious

Re: Where would Cresswell rank
Not really NS. Plus almost all his decent performances for the club came pre-PL or outside the top flight.

Re: Where would Cresswell rank
I think his lack of England caps is due to the fact he had Kenny Sampson then Stuart Pearce to dislodge. For us I thought he was superb but he could get away with a lack of discipline whereas at Liverpool he got found out.

Bit wide of the mark here Surf.

Dicks was lazy and unprofessional without a doubt but he had phenomenal ability for a defender in an age where people didn’t expect defenders to have skill.

He could dribble, run at pace with control and had a humdinger of a shot on him. I saw him beat multiple players with outrageous skill many times.
